Origins

Like wine, the character of coffee is influenced by the terroir of its homeland. To experience for yourself how terroir affects coffee, you’d only need to sample some of our origin coffees offered in this section. What you’ll learn and the flavors you’ll discover will make it an exceptionally rewarding journey!

To experience for yourself how terroir affects coffee, you’d only need to sample some of our origin coffees offered in this section. It’s like taking a trip around the globe, one coffee at a time.

You can begin your adventure close to home. We have a terrific Hawaiian Kona coffee grown in the rich volcanic soil of Mauna Loa. These beans take their time ripening in the misty warmth of their tropical mountain microclimate. And our Kona also comes from beans that ripen slowly in a humid climate. Then there’s our Mexican Primo Altura, the best Mexican coffee on the market. It grows at ultra high altitudes, which produces denser beans with wonderful complexities. From Central America we have award-winning Costa Rican coffee, an exquisite example of Panamanian coffee, and a fine Guatemalan coffee that is among the highest grown coffees in the world.

Venture a little further south and sample South American coffees, including some of the finest Colombian coffee the country has to offer. And we have a full-bodied Brazilian coffee, which grows at an unusual altitude (relatively low) and an unusual latitude (relatively distant from the equator) compared with most coffee growing regions of the world. The increased distance from the equator means the coffee trees don’t have to be shaded. So unlike most coffees, it grows in the sunshine, which imparts a distinctive flavor profile.

Traveling east across the Atlantic to Africa you’ll find several treasures including a revered Kenyan coffee, and some Ethiopian coffees that highlight how different coffee beans from the same country can be.

Continuing eastward to Asia and Oceania, if you’re truly adventurous, you might try an unusual Indian coffee that is processed using a distinctive method unique to its region. This coffee beautifully illustrates how dramatically the flavor of a coffee can be affected by the way it’s processed.

To really explore the world of coffee, first explore the coffees of the world. What you’ll learn and the flavors you’ll discover will make it an exceptionally rewarding journey!
