Top 5 Most Common Coffee Mistakes

Have you ever had a cup of coffee that is…well…absolutely disgusting?  Whether it’s overly bitter, over extracted or completely watery, we’ve all had a nasty cup of coffee before (truck stop coffee, anyone?).  But how does coffee get to be so bad and how can we start making delicious cups of coffee every single morning?

We like to think that coffee is an art, not a science, so it may take awhile before you create your perfect cup. But we also know that you may not have years (like we do) to create the perfect brew every time. Either way, we’ve come up with the top 5 ways you might be ruining your coffee so you can create your own coffee masterpiece every single morning.

1) Grinding your coffee too fine

While some may be convinced that grinding your coffee into a fine sand-like consistency will extend the amount of coffee you have, we’re not so convinced (and hey, we’re the experts!). We understand wanting to get more bang for your buck, but playing mind games with your coffee isn’t always going to work. You may even be using too much coffee…but we’ll get to that in a minute.  When it comes to grinding coffee, don’t grind it too finely or too coarsely.  Shoot for the middle ground (depending on your brewing method!  See #2).

2) Using the wrong brewing method

Using the wrong grind also means you may be getting the wrong taste. Depending on your method of brewing, your coffee beans need to be ground to the right size to get the best taste. You should really leave the fine grinds for the drip method or an espresso maker, a medium grind for a drip brewer and a coarse grind for a French Press. So instead of always grinding your coffee beans down to sand, let’s leave the sand to the beach.

3) Using too much coffee

As we mentioned a little earlier, using the wrong amount of coffee can ruin its taste. We know we said that coffee making is an art, but there’s a little bit of science involved, too. And by science we mean measuring the amount of coffee you’re about to brew. Our coffee pros here at The Roasterie recommend 2 tbsp of coffee per every 6-8 oz of water.

4) Using stale coffee

Sometimes, your bad cup of coffee may not be entirely your fault. Oftentimes, this means you have just used stale coffee beans. Fortunately for you, here at The Roasterie, we air roast our coffee. This means that beans you buy from us will stay fresh for 1 to 2 weeks (if kept in an air-tight container!). Ground coffee from other companies, however, only stays fresh for a few days.

5) Using too many additions 

Not many people drink strictly black coffee. That’s why we have drinks like macchiatos, cappuccinos, lattes and so on. But too much of a good thing can ruin your crafted cup of coffee. Additives like sugar and milk should be used to accentuate your coffee, not make it into something it’s not. Let your coffee be itself! You may even find a blend that needs little to no additives as your perfect coffee match.
