Drink Coffee, Live Longer!

Many of us were surprised (or perhaps flabbergasted is a better term), when the New England Journal of Medicine came out with a study that proved that coffee drinkers may live longer than non-coffee drinkers this summer. For years we have heard that coffee stunts growth, tints teeth and may even be linked to high cholesterol and heart rhythm disturbances.

So obviously, hearing that coffee drinking correlates with longevity made us jump for joy here at The Roasterie. After all, if we don’t have at least 3 cups a day, we seem to be unable to function!

But is it true? Do coffee drinkers live longer? And is coffee drinking actually good for you?

In the New England Journal of Medicine’s 13-year study, scientists found that coffee drinkers are less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory problems, strokes, injuries and accidents, diabetes and infections—whether they chose decaf or full-strength. In fact, drinking 2-3 cups of coffee a day lowered the overall risk of death by 10%!

So far so good, right? Guess what? There’s more good news!

Coffee does more than just improve longevity. It’s also been found to be rich in antioxidants, which helps prevent oxidation (a process that causes damage to cells and contributes to aging). In addition, coffee has been found to prevent Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, liver cirrhosis, gallstones, kidney stones, Alzheimer’s and asthma. Plus, the caffeine in coffee is a well-known stimulant that can actually promote alertness, attention and wakefulness (obviously, that’s the #1 reason we drink it!).

Of course, we’re not dummies here at The Roasterie. We are well aware that too much coffee can definitely have its downsides. In fact, studies have found that more than 7 cups of coffee per day can cause problems to the human body including high blood pressure, heartburn, difficulty sleeping, irritation, dehydration and eventually…dependence! Our suggestion is to practice coffee moderation—anywhere from 2 to 4 cups of coffee a day is just fine (when it comes to caffeine, there really can be “too much of a good thing!”).

So what’s the bottom line? Drink coffee in moderation and you may outlive all of the other non-coffee drinkers on the planet! And what does this mean for The Roasterie? It means that when our employees are each 104 years old, they may still be hunting, selling, shipping and concocting some of the best darn coffee you’ve ever had—after all, we each drink at least 3 cups of day…we plan on being around for awhile!
