6 Cups A Day Keeps the Doctor Away: Is Coffee a Cure for Womb and Prostate Cancer?

We all know that an apple a day keeps the doctor away.  But can six cups of coffee every day actually help us avoid the risk of womb and prostate cancer?  In a recent article in MailOnline, it was reported that women who drink four to six cups of coffee (decaf or caffeinated) every day are less likely to suffer from womb cancer and men are less likely to suffer from prostate cancer.

In the study, researchers tested nearly 67,000 women and found that drinking coffee actually reduced the risk of endometrial cancer by 25%.  Those who drank less than one cup per day had a higher risk of developing the cancer.

The study also found that men who drink six cups of coffee a day had an 18% lower risk of suffering prostate cancer (and a 60% lower risk of developing its most deadly form!).

This study has left everybody wondering…why?  There are two main explanations:

  • Coffee may have a positive effect on insulin levels.  Past research has linked insulin levels with tumor growth.  Therefore, coffee can actually decrease the chance of tumor development.
  • Coffee improves glucose processing and also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.  All of these aspects play a role in cancer progression.

The only downfall to this?  The coffee has to be black.  No sugar, no cream (but hey, that’s the way we like it!).  Adding in the extra calories from sugar and cream could actually offset the benefits gained from coffee.

  1. I don’t know if coffee is a cure for those ailments but I DO know that having coffee at the Roasterie in Brookside is a cure for a “I can’t get any work done” ailment. Check out my blog post on the subject at http://uncommonlifestyle.com/?p=2704 Thanks for doing coffee — and the whole coffee shop experience — right.
