HEALTH
There are all kinds of great health benefits to a good cup of coffee. Here are some of our favorites.
- Coffee protects the liver, we hear from Arthur Klatsky, MD. Among people who had developed chronic liver disease from heavy alcohol intake, those who drank one to three cups of coffee per day were about 40% less likely to develop cirrhosis (characterized by a scarred liver with diminished function) than those who did not drink coffee. Those who drank more than four cups per day reduced their risk by 80%. It is unclear whether the benefit is due to caffeine or another ingredient. Arthur Klatsky, MD, is a cardiologist and adjunct investigator, division of research, Kaiser Permanente, Oakland, California, and leader of a 14-year study of 125,580 people.
