GREEN INITIATIVES
The Roasterie is committed to helping build a healthy future. As we continue to grow, we want to minimize the impact we have on the environment. We’re conscious about our responsibility to engage in sustainable practices. Following is just a short list of some of the things we do every day.
- Buy all origin coffees at least 30 percent above fair trade pricing
- Re-use corrugated boxes for shipping/storage and bale/recycle what we cannot reuse
- Compost grounds and chaff on site and at a nearby farm
- Send burlap coffee bags to local organizations for reuse
- In 2008, we installed a heat exchanger to recycle the hot air exhausted from the roasters to heat our building.
- Work with InkCycle and LaserCycle to recycle all ink and toner cartridges
- Recycle and shred all paper waste
- Transport freight by rail whenever possible
- Turn lights off whenever we leave a room – company policy!
- All incoming faxes are now electronic to reduce unnecessary paper printing
We will be completing the following projects by Fall 2009.
- Re-fit all lighting in our plant and Café to be high-efficiency, low energy consumption bulbs and fixtures
- A contest among delivery vehicles for most improvement of miles-per-gallon and ongoing fuel savings
- Enhance margin and font on all documents to reduce paper consumption
You can help too! We’d like to put additional initiatives in place, but need some help with the following.
- We’re seeking a source where we can recycle the poly-foil bags for our coffee, which we use to ensure freshness. If you know of a company that can assist us, please call Nathan at 816-931-4000
- A small amount of beans and grounds fall to the floor and can’t be used. We compost as much as possible, but still have a surplus of grounds from our Café in Brookside. If you’re interested in this compost for personal use, shoot us an email at info@theroasterie.com
